GE 'Sidegear' Oscillator 12" |
|
Circa 1909 |
|
The GE
‘Side-gear’ oscillator was the
companies first oscillating
fan and
first came on the market in 1909
and were sold for only a few
years, I really like these fans
and was really excited to have a
chance to buy it from the late
Jim Mosely, a fan collector for
many years and a great guy who I
was lucky to have known. This
fan is in excellent original condition
and only needed a good
cleaning. I really like the way
it looks from the side. If
you compare it to the AEG
oscillator you will see a nearly
identical design. A nice fan to
have in any condition. |

GE 'Furniture
Fan' |
|
Circa 1929 |
|
This fan was a
really unique design and
according to W.K. Skofield in
his book A Century Of
Electric Fans, “was intended
to simulate a piece of furniture
and sufficient appeal so it
would be permitted to remain in
the living room all year round,
instead of being consigned to
the closet or attic as soon as
cooler weather arrived.” I love
this fan with the wood grain
paint and overall design. But
compared to the paint on the 16
Diehl, it looks amateurish. Take
a peek. Interestingly, I have
seen two of these with the base
and yoke made of real wood which
probably was a big design flaw
for GE. |

GE 12" Quiet Blade w Orig. Chrome Plating Cat. # 49x491 CP |
|
Circa 1934 |
|
This is a fan Steve Cunningham
has always talked about being
his favorite among the different
chrome plated fans from this
era. According to Steve, very
few of these are among us and
fewer in nice condition. I
believe I outbid Steve on this
particular one on eBay several
years ago and it is a purchase I
have never regretted. In
addition to have rather nice
plating intact, this one ones
really nice and quiet as it
should. Likely was used in a
setting needing to be sterile
such as a hospital or Butcher
shop. I can only recall seeing
one more for sale since I
bought this one and I believe
it was re-plated. |
